MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Following its tough weekend at Keiser University this past week, Florida Memorial University's baseball team will hit the road again looking to right the proverbial ship when it takes on Voorhees College (S.C.) in a non-conference three-game weekend series beginning Friday.

After making the nearly 600-mile trip to The Palmetto State, FMU will play a doubleheader on Friday, with the first game of the day set for a 12 noon first pitch and the second game beginning shortly after the conclusion of the first. The teams are scheduled to play the third game of the series Saturday, also set for 12 p.m.

Voorhees College's health and safety protocols prohibits fans from attending sporting events. Also, unfortunately, it is unclear if Voorhees will be providing an online live stream of the games. Florida Memorial University's sports information department will attempt to provide score updates of the games via its social media channels.

The main thing for the Lions this weekend, though, will be getting back to playing winning baseball. FMU (6-7) dropped its weekend series at No. 15 Keiser University this past weekend, losing all three games by 10 runs. It was the first time this season that Florida Memorial didn't take at least one game in a three-game set against an opponent.

The Lions' bats started off cold against the Seahawks – getting just four runs and eight hits in the first two games – but started to heat up by the third game, as they racked up 13 hits and scored eight runs. Where FMU struggled was on the mound. Senior and ace pitcher Johnaikel Acosta, who has been dealing with an upper extremity injury since his last start two weeks ago, didn't throw this past weekend.

FMU's pitching staff battled but struggled to keep Keiser's batters in check.

Taking on Voorhees College this weekend could be a bit of a "get right" opportunity for FMU, though. The Tigers (0-3) have gotten off to a slow start this season, losing its first three games by a combined score of 40-8. Voorhees batters have also struck out 22 times through the first three games while posting a derisory .205 slugging percentage and .300 on-base percentage.

While this weekend's non-conference series will have no real bearing on FMU's postseason prospects, it will give Lions head coach Florentino Burgos another opportunity to see how his pitching staff continues to mature – especially if Acosta continues to miss time – while also tinkering with his batting order to build flexibility and depth at the plate.
