FMU Baseball Accepts Bid To Black College World Series

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Almost exactly 74 years after Jack "Jackie" Robinson broke the color lines of Major League Baseball, Florida Memorial University's baseball program will continue the spirit of that legacy as it has accepted a bid to participate in the inaugural Black College Nines/BCSG 360 Black College World Series.

The groundbreaking event is set to feature eight baseball teams from historically Black colleges or universities (HBCUs) – four from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and four from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) – and will take place April 28th through May 1st at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

Florida Memorial, the only HBCU in South Florida, accepted the bid along with Edward Waters College (Fla.), Rust College (Miss.), Xavier University of Louisiana, Savannah State University (Ga.), and Bluefield State University (W. Va.).

All of the event's games will be available to be viewed live on the Black College Sports Network at www.mybcsn.net/diamond. Games will also be available on the BCSN YouTube channel (myjbnonline) and via the MyJBN/MyBCSN App, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The event will feature two divisions (one division of four NCAA Division-II teams and one division of four NAIA teams) with each division playing a double-elimination format and winners of each division then facing off in a one-game playoff to determine the first-ever Black College World Series champion.

Aside from all the baseball action, there will be many other ancillary events associated with the event. There will be an opening-pitch reception and a home run derby, which FMU's Nathan Harris Jr. has been selected to participate in.

Receiving the bid was a tip of the cap to Florida Memorial head coach Florentino Burgos and the work he's done to elevate the profile of the Lions' baseball program.

In his five years leading FMU baseball, Burgos has made the Lions more than relevant in what is one of the toughest baseball divisions in the country – The Sun Conference, which has featured as many as four teams ranked inside the national top 25 this season.

This season, Florida Memorial has earned single victories over victories over No. 14 St. Thomas University and No. 25 Webber International University while standing toe-to-toe with No. 2 Southeastern University – holding a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning – before falling 3-2 back on April 16th.
