MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Although it couldn't pull off a complete upset of its nationally ranked rival St. Thomas University this past weekend, Florida Memorial University played some spirited baseball and will be looking to generate some momentum when it travels to face Ave Maria University for a midweek non-conference single game Tuesday at Bowie Ballpark.

Though the two are Sun Conference cohorts, whenever TSC face off in midweek (Tuesday or Wednesday) single games, the result doesn't count towards the teams' conference record.

Tuesday's game, which is slated for a 2 p.m. start, will not be open to visiting fans according to Ave Maria's COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Fans will be able to watch a live stream of the game as well as keep up with live stats for free via the Gyrenes' athletic department.

FMU (12-17) used a true gem of a pitching performance from senior Rafael Fernandez – which earned him Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week honors – to pull off a 5-2 upset of St. Thomas this past Friday (April 2). That win over the Bobcats was the first for Florida Memorial head coach Florentino Burgos in his tenure as the Lions' skipper.

The Lions nearly toppled STU in the second game of the series but lost a marathon battle 5-2 in 11 innings then went through a wonky game three – falling 12-3 in 8 innings.

Still, FMU showed it can stand toe-to-toe with just about any team on any given day – and can topple just about any team when it receives a solid pitching performance.

Offensively, it was Jalen Young who had a hot bat this past weekend. The sophomore outfielder recorded 6 hits over the weekend with multiple RBI and runs scored while also stealing 3 bases.

In facing Ave Maria, the Lions will be taking on a struggling ball club that has lost four of its past five games. FMU did take its weekend series against the Gyrenes back in February (2-1). The Lions took the first two games then Burgos elected to reshuffle his lineup with some reserves and younger players, allowing Ave Maria to take the third game.

Pitching will once again be key for Florida Memorial – especially as it looks to perhaps start a winning streak.
