Lions Drop Two Friday At STU Volleyball Invitational

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A shorthanded Florida Memorial University team had a tough outing Friday in the second day of the St. Thomas University Volleyball Invitational – dropping both of its games, 3-0 (15-25, 22-25, 18-25) to Midland University and 3-1 (22-25, 17-25, 25-22, 19-25) to Olivet Nazarene University in STU's Fernandez Family Center.

Friday's losses piled on top Thursday's season-opening loss to defending NAIA Volleyball National Champion and 2021 preseason No. 1 Missouri Baptist University.

FMU (0-3) had trouble getting its mojo going in the day's first match. After jumping out to a 6-3 advantage in the first, the Lions would be outscored 16-5 en route to Midland taking the first set 25-15. The Warriors would take the second and third sets from Florida Memorial in wire-to-wire fashion – as the Lady Lions never held a lead in either set.

Sisters Daphinie and Kimberlie Correa each had 5 kills against Midland University as did grad senior Sammyra Albarran. Agustina Busque tied for the game-high with 2 aces while Biancaliz Cruz finished with a game-high 12 digs.

Florida Memorial, which will have 10 full days of practice before it is set to travel to Louisiana to take part in the Xavier University of Louisiana Tournament on September 3-4, did have a bit better showing in its match against Olivet Nazarene.

The Tigers did take the first set from FMU 25-22 and ended up taking the second set as well after the teams played to an 8-8 tie but Olivet went on a 7-0 spurt to pull away and was able to cruise into a 25-17 victory.

FMU was able to avoid the sweep, capturing the third set – which was a back-and-forth battle with the Tigers that featured seven ties and four lead changes. Gripped at 21, it was the Lions that would score the next three points – scoring on a Tigers service error, a service ace by Azmabeth Infante, and an Albarran kill. Olivet Nazarene tacked on an additional point – thanks to an FMU service error – but the Lady Lions were able to come away with the 25-22 set win thanks to another Olivet service error.

The fourth set belonged practically solely to the Tigers – who won 25-19 in wire-to-wire fashion – as FMU would only get as close as two throughout after ONU opened up a five-point lead.

Florida Memorial did win the total block margin (9-1) led by Kimberlie Correa's 5 blocks. Albarran recorded a game-high 14 kills against Olivet Nazarene and Cruz finished with a team-high 20 digs.
