Correa Shines, Lady Lions Sweep Edward Waters Thursday

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Different venue, same result.

Forced away from the friendly confines of the FMU Wellness Center, Florida Memorial University's volleyball team was still able to keep its undefeated streak against Edward Waters University alive as it picked up a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 26-24, 25-18) Thursday night at the Bunche Park Gymnasium in front of nearly 100 fans.

Coming into Thursday's match, the Lady Lions had not lost a single set to their historically Black university (HBCU) rival through their previous four matches. Impressively, Florida Memorial was able to pick up another three-set victory despite playing the home match at the neighboring park's facility due to their home arena floor being unavailable due to maintenance.

The Lions, who had just over two weeks of practice time leading up Thursday's game since their scheduled four-game trip to New Orleans, Louisiana was canceled due to Hurricane Ida's impact on the Gulf Coast, looked like a team that was brimming with energy and enthusiasm because it was back on the court yet still had to knock off a bit of rust because it was finally playing against live competition again.

Florida Memorial, which will have just under a week off before it hosts rival Keiser University in its Sun Conference opener on September 15, jumped out a 10-2 lead on Edward Waters in the opening set. Senior middle blocker Daphinie Correa brought the emotional and tactical lift back to the Lions' lineup – which it missed during the COVID-shortened 2020 season as she was away from the team – coming up with big kills and blocks near the net then letting out big yells as she celebrated with teammates; doing her part to power what ended up being a 25-13 set win.

To its credit, EWU showed quite a bit of moxie during the second set. Instead of digging themselves into a deep hole, the Tigers battled Florida Memorial nip and tuck throughout – even taking a 23-21 lead late – as the Lions showed some of the rust of being off for a fortnight.

FMU head coach Marrita Crockett-Moulton called a timeout to calm her team and the Lions responded by outscoring Edward Waters 5-1 – including a big kill by Sammyra Albarran – to take the second set 26-24.

The third set was a mix of the first two. FMU (1-3) jumped out to decent lead early (5-1) before the Tigers made a couple of small pushes to close the margin. It was Correa's energy and talent that shined again in the third set as she showed a mix of power and savvy with hits at the net to propel Florida Memorial to the 25-18 set-win and earn the Lions their first victory of the season.
