FMU Sets New Season-High For Goals, Falls At Edward Waters Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Even with Amealia Smith's season-high 2 goals and recording a new season-high for goals scored in a single game, Florida Memorial University was unable to topple host Edward Waters University Sunday, falling 4-3 to the Tigers at EWU's Glover Community Stadium & Field.

The three goals Sunday was the most FMU's women have scored in a match since the 2018 season – when the Lions scored three goals in a game against Webber International University.

After the game went into halftime tied at two, saw the teams trade goals in a matter of seconds in the second half to tie it at three – with Edward Waters taking a 3-2 lead in the 62nd minute then FMU knotting the game again not even 20 seconds later – it was a Tigers goal in the 86th minute that sank the Lions.

Florida Memorial (0-5) had its best offensive performance Sunday. Aside from the Smith's goals – the first of which tied the game at one in the 20th minute – the Lions were aggressive and possessed the ball for chunks of time. FMU totaled 12 shots (five on goal) and had two corner kicks.

Kelsey Akins also recorded her first goal of the season Sunday, a hard shot in the box past the EWU goalie in the 36th minute, which put the Lions ahead 2-1 – the second time this season Florida Memorial has led during a match.

FMU, which will have a few extra days off before it returns to the pitch for a regular season game since its September 23rd scrimmage was canceled and now won't play until it hosts University of South Carolina-Beaufort on September 30th, can use the extra time off because of the physicality of the match Sunday.

Despite being called for just four fouls, Edward Waters (3-3) seemingly made it a point to make plenty of contact with the Lions – whether it was on or away from the ball. Florida Memorial stood toe-to-toe with the Tigers, but the physical nature of the match and the varying whistles from the officials did add to the Lions' attrition Sunday.
