Lions Tame Hostile Crowd, Webber International Wednesday

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Playing and playing well in front of big crowds – especially on the road – is a trait of a championship-caliber team.

Florida Memorial University continued to show its "championship mindset", going into a hostile road environment and earning a 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20) victory over host Webber International University Wednesday night in front of a near-capacity crowd inside WIU'S Sabbagh Athletic Center.

The Lions (6-3, 5-0 The Sun Conference) quieted the jeering crowd with each point and sent them home disappointed as FMU extended its conference-best six-game winning streak and remained unbeaten against Sun Conference opponents this season.

FMU, which won the 2019 Sun Conference Indoor Volleyball Tournament Championship and the inaugural 2021 Sun Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament Championship, dominated the Warriors Wednesday – outdoing Webber International in every major statistical category.

Lions graduate senior Sammyra Albarran, a naturally intense player on the court, was boosted by the emotional crowd. The outside hitter racked up a game-highs in kills (16), digs (14), and service aces (7).

Agustina Busque finished with a game-high 21 assists while Alanis Santana added 17 assists. Lions junior Biancaliz Cruz added 10 kills; Kimberlie Correa had 9 kills with a .467 attack percentage and Daphinie Correa, who returned to FMU's lineup after missing the team's last game with an undisclosed injury, had 8 kills and tied for a game-high 4 blocks.

FMU took flexed its muscle early Wednesday. After falling behind 3-0, the Lions went on to outscore Webber 25-10 – including going on an 8-0 powered by Albarran, who scored five of the eight points during the spurt.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle throughout. Three points was the most the teams were separated by early (a 13-10 FMU lead) before they were knotted at 19. It was Albarran that came up big for Florida Memorial again, as she scored three points of in a 4-0 run that put the Lions up for good and allowed them settle in a 25-22 win.

The Warriors (9-8, 0-4) took the third set 25-17 – closing the game on a 9-2 run.

Wednesday's fourth set saw FMU take an 18-14 lead before the Warriors were able to pull within 18-17. That would be as close as Webber would get though, as the Lions finished the game by outscoring WIU 7-3 – ending the match on an Warriors attack error.
