FMU Faces Florida National In Home Opener Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The last time Florida Memorial University's women's soccer program played a home match – October 12, 2019 – the world hadn't heard of COVID-19 and over 50 percent of the players on its current roster was still in high school.

Hosting its first home match in nearly two years, FMU will be hoping for a bit of "home cooking" when it faces Florida National University Thursday morning at Dr. Lester Brown Park.

The Lady Lions' two-year road stretch equaled out to 11 games over that span. Florida Memorial's final six games of the 2019 season were all road contests and had four consecutive road games to start the – ultimately COVID-shortened – 2020 season. And the team's first game of the 2021 season saw it travel to face Ave Maria University this past Saturday.

FMU (0-1) will be looking to rebound from its tough outing against the Gyrenes as it welcomes in a Florida National team that has struggled during the early part of this season as well.

The Conquistadors dropped its first three games by a combined 7-0 margin and has had equally tough times stopping goals as well as producing them.

Florida Memorial sophomore Natalie Puntonet continues to be one of the team's most aggressive and viable offensive options. Puntonet led the team in shots on goal and total shots against Ave Maria as she works majorly from her left back position.

Playing on its home pitch and an aggressive offensive approach may be just what the Lions need to earn first-year head coach Anna Maliszewska her first victory and team's first home win since the 2014 season.
