FMU Flag Earns Program’s First Win, Tops Midland University 9-0

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – In her first game as "QB1" for Florida Memorial University, Diamond Mays helped lead the Lions to their first flag football victory as they defeated Midland University (Neb.) 9-0 Friday at St. Thomas University.

How It Happened

FMU clung to a 2-0 lead through the third quarter after getting a safety shortly after halftime.
The Lions extended their lead in the fourth when Mays connected with Ericka Johnson on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Florida Memorial's defense had its best day of the season, notching three interceptions while shutting out the Warriors.

Mays completed 12 of 41 passes for 92 yards with a TD and an interception.
Johnson led the team in flag pulls – totaling four while also nabbing an interception and being credited with 2 pass breakups.

Analysis & Notes

Mays, who is also a member of the FMU women's basketball team, was playing in her first flag football game Friday since she's been unavailable due to the on-going women's basketball season.
Santos was also making her debut for the Lions against Midland, as she was cleared to play after missing the first three games of the season.
Florida Memorial, which went 0-3 in 2021 before opting out of the remainder of the season for health and safety reason, improves to 1-3 overall this season.
Midland University falls to 0-2 this season.
