MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University can do itself a big favor in the Sun Conference standings if it has a strong showing and comes away with a series win this weekend when it travels to face Ave Maria University in three-game series beginning Friday at AMU's Bowie's Ballpark.

The teams will play a single game Friday at 2 p.m. then return the diamond Saturday for a doubleheader slated to start at 12 p.m.

About The Lions (11-13, 3-6 SUN)
  • FMU dropped its fourth-straight game this past Tuesday when it saw a furious ninth-inning rally fall just short in an 11-9 loss at No. 10 St. Thomas University.
  • The Lions cut into the deficit in the ninth inning; getting two runs thanks to a walk and a hit-by-pitch along with RBIs by Jensy Doval, Luis Velandia, and Axel Gomez.
  • Florida Memorial continues to be a strong offensive team – scoring at least two runs in every game this season while also scoring at least eight runs in eight games.
  • Also, FMU is 6-2 in games this season when scoring at least eight runs.
  • Luis Ruiz leads the Lions in total hits (31), runs scored (24), and doubles (8).
  • FMU skipper Florentino Burgos' pitching staff currently has two hurlers with ERAs under 3 – Ramon Garcia (2.57) and Isaias Espiritusantos (2.89).

Scouting Ave Maria (18-13-1, 2-7 SUN)
  • Ave Maria enters the weekend having topped University of Fort Lauderdale in both games of a midweek non-conference doubleheader.
  • The wins over Fort Lauderdale snapped a three-game losing streak for Gyrenes.
  • AMU has performed well against ranked teams this season – earning single wins against St. Thomas (No. 17 at the time) and Keiser University (No. 8 at the time) while suffering a slim loss to Southeastern University (No. 3 at the time) and tying with Middle Georgia State University (No. 19 at the time).
  • Ave Maria has two of the conference's better sluggers in Kolby Blanchard, who leads the team with six homers, and Jose Gonzalez, who leads AMU in hits, doubles, and RBI.
  • Gyrenes head coach Michael McCormick, a former pitcher that spent time in the Chicago White Sox organization, is in his third season leading the program.

Series History
  • Florida Memorial trails the all-time series against Ave Maria 18-33.
  • The Lions have struggled when playing on AMU's home diamond – going 7-17 on the road.

Keys To Victory
  • FMU must stay consistent in its ability to produce runs in the early innings.
  • Pitching continues to be a thorn in the Lions' paw – if the team is to stay competitive in the conference, its pitching staff must be solid.
