MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After picking up a pair of non-conference wins earlier this week, Florida Memorial University will be looking to keep that momentum rolling as it hosts conference foe Thomas University (Ga.) for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at Harry T. Moore Field.

The teams are set to play a doubleheader Friday starting at 12 p.m. and play the third game of the series Saturday at 11 a.m.

About The Lions (14-15, 4-8 SUN)
  • FMU topped local rival Florida National University in a pair of non-conference midweek games this past Wednesday and Thursday.
  • The Lions have won three straight games at home following its 6-3 win over the Conquistadors Thursday.
  • Florida Memorial set a new single-game season-high for total strikeouts this past Thursday, racking up 16 strikeouts from nine pitchers.
  • FMU is currently in a three-way for sixth in the Sun Conference standings – with Ave Maria University and University of South Carolina-Beaufort – holding a conference record of 4-8.
  • Freshman outfielder/infielder Jensy Doval missed both games against FNU earlier this week with an undisclosed injury while junior outfielder Jalen Young made his return to the lineup Thursday after missing time with a lower extremity injury. Doval's status for the weekend series is unclear.
  • The defensive trio of Luis Ruiz (second base), Axel Gomez (shortstop), and Ulises Rodriguez (third base) has been playing plus-defense recently while also providing the Lions with productivity at the plate in the middle of the batting order.

Scouting Thomas (15-18, 0-9 SUN)
  • Thomas enters the weekend sore from a three-game weekend series sweep at the hands of No. 16 Middle Georgia State University.
  • The Night Hawks lost the three games to MGA by a combined score of 10-43.
  • TU has also struggled when facing SUN opponents – granted it loss all nine games to the three ranked teams in the conference (Keiser University, St. Thomas University, and Southeastern University) – with an 0-9 record.
  • The Night Hawks sit in ninth place in the current SUN standings.
  • Sophomore infielder Turner Maddox leads the team in batting average (.371) and hits (46) while ranking second in RBI (24).
  • Thomas head coach Tom Fleenor, who spent time as the skipper at NCAA Division-II Lenoir-Rhyne University, is in his third season leading the program.

Series History
  • Florida Memorial trails the all-time series 14-7.
  • The teams didn't face each other during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.
  • FMU swept the Night Hawks in their last series in Miami Gardens back during the 2019 season.

Keys To Victory
  • The Lions must avoid the pitching lapses that have plagued them this season – typically a letdown in a single inning that turns the tide in the opponent's favor.
  • FMU's sluggers – Nathan Harris, Yunior Sanchez, and Toval (if active) – must come up with hits when they're at the plate and there are runners on the base paths.
