Lions Bats Get Hot, Handles No. 7 St. Thomas In 13-6 Win In Weekend Series Opener Friday

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University jumped out early – scoring five in the first inning – and never let up, making easy work of host No. 7 St. Thomas University in a 13-6 victory Friday in the opening game of the weekend series between the teams at STU's Paul D. Mainieri Field.
 
How It Happened
  • FMU built a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning – taking advantage of a handful of St. Thomas breakdowns.
  • Two errors put runners on and two wild pitches allowed two runs to come in.
  • Axel Gomez, Fernando Vila, and Marlon Cuesta each had an RBI in the first inning.
  • The Lions tacked on two runs in each the second and third innings – including a 2-run home run by Cuesta in the third – to take a 9-2 lead.
  • St. Thomas cut into FMU's lead in the bottom of the fifth, manufacturing four runs to make it a 9-6 game.
  • Isaias Espiritusantos came into the game in relief in the fourth inning and gave up one hit and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
  • Florida Memorial's bats heated up again in the final three innings, producing five hits and another four runs to take the final 13-6 lead.
