MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After holding off a late-game rally attempt by Talladega College in the opening round, NAIA division No. 1 seed Florida Memorial University moved onto the winner's bracket game, where it will face rival Edward Waters University Thursday afternoon in the Tyson Foods Black College World Series at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

About The Lions (24-21)

FMU advanced to the winner's bracket by earning a 5-4 win over Talladega College Wednesday.
Senior infielder Axel Gomez hit a 2-run home run and finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored to lead the Lions.
Senior outfielder Rohandry Javier was a perfect 4-for-4 Wednesday and 3 runs scored.
Florida Memorial got solid pitching to start from Max Charnin, who ended up giving up just 3 hits and 1 run through 5 innings of work, and a solid close from All-Sun Conference Second Teamer Isaias Espiritusantos, who got the final three outs and held the potentially game-tying run on base.
FMU defeated Edward Waters in their doubleheader meeting earlier this season – edging the Tigers 5-4 in game one and thrashing them 14-9 in the second.

Scouting Edward Waters (25-26)

Edward Waters knocked off Rust College 9-6 in the opening round game to reach the winner's bracket game.
The Tigers didn't play the cleanest game Wednesday – being charged with two errors – and had a big sixth inning largely because of fielding errors by Rust.
EWU has been an inconsistent team this season – evidence in its slightly below-.500 record – but has shown it can produce runs.
Sophomore outfielder Dalton Pass leads the team with a .357 batting average while senior infielder Payton Shubert leads the team in hits (51) and is one of four players with at least 40 hits for the Tigers this year.

Florida Memorial leads the all-time series against EWU 11-8.
Thursday's game will be the fifth meeting of the 2022 season between the programs.
