MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University took on the SCAD Savannah Bees in the first round of the Sun Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, defeating the Bees 4-0 at Dr. Lester Brown Park. Senior striker and second-team all-conference selection
Brad Tulley finished with a match-high two goals in the first tournament victory for the Lions since 2014.
FMU started out strong and took an early lead when
Tramaine Lawson linked up with
Brad Tulley, who found the back of the net after skillfully beating two SCAD defenders inside the penalty area. Tulley doubled the lead just two minutes later when
Jaheim Rose played a perfectly weighted ball over the opposition's back line for Tulley to chip the Bees goalkeeper, scoring his ninth goal of the season and becoming the season's leading goal scorer for the Lions.
As a result, the Lions went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
After the break, both teams battled back and forth making their attacks down the field. In the 67th minute, speedster Tyreike Spalding found an opening when he dispossessed a SCAD defender and made his way down the pitch to beat the Bees goalkeeper with a solid strike in the bottom right corner of the goal. Florida Memorial kept applying pressure as they found the back of the net again in the 81st minute when Rose assisted
Noah Link to give him his first goal of the season. The Bees were unable to respond as they were eliminated from the SUN Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, including newly crowned SUN Player of the Year Ryan Holmes, who was held scoreless.
Florida Memorial had a total of 11 shots, five of which were on target, while their counterparts produced nine shots.
FMU goalkeeper
Joshua Aranzazu produced three saves to keep a clean sheet as he stood behind a stellar back line that included
Bryce Dickerson,
Thomas Cole,
Jaheim Rose, and first-team all-conference defender
Tibo Gobet.
In total, the aggressive contest included a total of 33 fouls and five yellow cards issued.
The Lions now advance to the semi-finals where they will take on the Bobcats in the third version of the Battle of Miami Gardens. The semi-final, held on Tuesday, Nov. 7, will be at AutoNation field on the campus of St. Thomas University.
