Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. | Florida Memorial's trip to Keiser ended in a 13-7 defeat at the hands of the Seahawks. The Lions kept it close for the middle portion of the game, but the final innings derailed the Lions' comeback.
The Seahawks opened the game with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, leaving FMU at a major disadvantage early. Senior
Ulises Rodriguez put FMU on the board in the top of the second, with a two-RBI single that brought freshman
Daniel Sanchez and outfielder
Raymond Rivera around the diamond to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Keiser answered with a run in the bottom of the second to open the gap once again before the Lions came calling with three runs in the top of the fourth, scored by junior
Ernie Farrell, Rivera, and Venezuela native
Ivan Zambrano. Rodriguez hit a home run in the top of the sixth, followed by a
Pheron Charlton sacrifice ground out that scored
Luis Ruiz, putting FMU down 8-7 with three innings to go.
The Seahawks responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth followed by a run in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away and stop FMU of the late game comeback.
Junior pitcher
William Hiciano (1-1) recorded his first loss of the season, allowing six hits and five runs in one inning of action. Freshman
Jonah Guinto came in relief and in one inning allowed one hit, three runs, and one walk. Sophomore
Diego Coss was called up next and struck out one Seahawk in two innings of work.
Miami native
Kelvin Feliciano followed suit and in two innings allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out two Seahawks. Transfer student
Stephen West came in relief and in one inning allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three Seahawks. Tokyo native
Ryudai Watanabe rounded out the pitching lineup for the Lions and finished allowing one hit, one run, and one walk in one inning of action.
The loss drops FMU to 2-4 on the season.
The Lions return to action Thursday, February 22, where they'll travel to across town to take on St. Thomas in the Battle of Miami Gardens. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Miami Gardens, Fla.
