MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial ended its four-game series with a bang as they put on another dominating performance in the final innings to claim the 14-6 victory at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field and complete the series sweep on Florida National.
The Lions opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first scored by junior
Pheron Charlton, senior
Raymond Rivera, and junior
Ernie Farrell. Second baseman
Ulises Rodriguez generated the two RBI that brought Rivera and Farrell around the diamond to give FMU a 3-0 lead after one inning.
FMU kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the third, adding another trio of runs to the score, from Charlton, Farrell, and senior
Nathan Harris to make the score 6-0. Florida National began chipping away at the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth before adding one run apiece in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Now only up by one, Rodriguez added another RBI to his count, scoring Farrell for his third run of the game to open the lead to two runs. FNU scored for the fourth straight inning, bringing the score to 7-6 heading into the eighth inning.
Just as it was in game two of the series, the bottom of the eighth proved to be the dream inning for the Lions as they generated seven runs to balloon their lead to eight over Florida National. Senior
Genesis Nunez kicked off the dream inning scoring run number eight, before a hit-by-pitched rewarded Rivera with the ninth run for the Lions.
A
Kyle Morrison single-RBI scored Rodriguez for FMU's tenth run of the game, which was followed by another hit-by-pitch that scored shortstop
Marco Medina. A Farrell single-RBI brought sophomore
Keith Harden around the diamond for run number 12, before catcher interference scored Morrison for the 13th run for FMU. Rivera's single RBI scored senior
Luis Ruiz for the Lions' 14th run of the game and after shutting out FNU in the top of the ninth, the Lions celebrated with a complete sweep over their South Florida rival in the four-game series.
Junior
William Hiciano (1-1) earned the victory, striking out five Conquistadors in five innings pitched. Junior
Jacob Williams came in relief, only surrendering one run in his time on the mound. Freshman
Jonah Guinto was next in line striking out one Conquistador while allowing only one run and two hits. Sophomore
Diego Coss rounded out the pitchers for FMU, allowing only one walk in his lone inning on the mound.
The win marks the fifth straight for FMU, advancing them to 7-4 on the year.
The Lions return to action Tuesday, March 5, where they'll host Bryant & Stratton for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.
