FMU baseball swept in doubleheader by Webber

Lions lose the weekend after dropping the first three games.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial struggles during the doubleheader against Webber as the Lions dropped game one 14-4 before falling in game three 7-2. The doubleheader sweep means FMU drops the weekend series against the Warriors after losing the opening three games.

Game 2:
FMU 4 - WIU 14

The Lions fell behind early when Webber scored nine runs in the first four innings, leaving a 9-0 score going into the bottom of the fourth. Second baseman Adrian Astudillo hit a 2 RBI single that brought home seniors Luis Ruiz and Reinaldo Prieto for FMU's first two runs of the game. An Ivan Zambrano sacrifice RBI scored Pheron Charlton in the bottom of the fifth followed by a a Ruiz RBI that scored senior Raymond Rivera, leaving FMU with a 9-4 deficit. Webber pulled away with three runs in the top of the sixth followed by two runs in the top of the seventh to end the contest, handing FMU the loss in game two of the series.

FMU pitcher Stephen West (1-2) was credited with the loss allowing three hits and five earned runs while striking out one Warrior. Sophomore Daniel Ramos came in relief allowing two hits and four unearned runs while striking out two Warriors. Tokyo native Ryudai Watanabe was next in line allowing four hits and three earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Mexico City native Marco Medina came in relief before an injury took him off the mound. 

Junior Aubrey Yarbrough made his first appearance of the season with two earned runs and three walks in his short stint on the mound. Mexico City native Andres Mendes finished pitching duties for FMU allowing only one hit and striking out two Warriors.


Game 3:
FMU 2 - WIU 7

Webber scored the first run of the game in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Left fielder Gianni Tusa hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second to send Prieto home for the game-tying run. The Warrior broke the tie in the top of the fifth with two runs before adding an additional two runs in the top of the sixth to build a 5-1 lead. A home run from Nathan Harris closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth for the Lions but two runs from the Warriors in the top of the seventh put the game out of reach FMU, handing them the series defeat.

Junior William Hiciano (5-3) was credited with the loss, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Junior Kelvin Feliciano came in relief and in 3.2 innings allowed two hits and two earned runs.

The sweep drops FMU to 16-19 on the year and 5-14 in conference play.

The Lions return to action Saturday, April 13, where they'll host Webber for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field.
