FMU's Perez scores twice as Lions roll through FNU 4-1 in season opener

HIALEAH, Fla. | Senior Colombian striker Donna Perez Rodriguez scored two goals as Florida Memorial University dominated Florida National 4-1 in the season opener at Milander Park. As a team, the Lions generated 24 total shots while their opponents finished with just five.

Furthermore, FMU produced 14 shots on goal while the Conquistadors produced just two.

"I told my team to execute in the final third," said FMU head women's soccer coach Marc Lue Young. "We needed to finish our scoring opportunities; I think we had a few more opportunities where we could have scored in the first half, but nonetheless we did well to get the win, and I'm very proud of the young ladies."

Sophomore striker Sierra Bartley and sophomore forward Soemili Perez both scored their first goal of the season while winger Rudo Marufu generated two brilliant assists in the victory. New FMU goalkeeper Lucia Martinez Garcia allowed one goal and produced one save in her first career victory as Lions' keeper.

The Lions return to action on Thursday, September 5 a they host Florida National for the home opener. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Dr. Lester Brown Park.
