MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial University will begin their 2026 season this Saturday against NCAA II team and fellow HBCU, Edward Waters. Head coach Miguel "Bookie" Nunez enters his first season leading the program, returning to the Lions for the first time since 2015.
"It's a blessing, having this team, getting the opportunity to coach these student-athletes," said Nunez. "We have six returning players and I expect a lot out of them this season."
As Bookie mentioned, the Lions have six returners entering this season. Juniors
Alyssa Estrada and
Ariyuana DuPont enter their third season with the Lions, alongside teammates
Kamille Lucas,
Mariana Gongora, and
Kylie Enrique. Junior
Leny Hoyos enters her second season with the Lions
"I'm expecting a lot from Kylie, who's one of the top hitters in the conference. Mariana will move from third base to shortstop. Kamille is going to be our utility player and DuPont will lock down the outfield and educate her teammates. These girls are putting in a lot of hard work. They're learning and I can't wait to get started."
Seven new players join the Lions this season, including multiple multi-sport athletes, like
Aviyah Henderson,
Joemyrah Clendinen,
Serena Edwards, and
Irene Lainez. Junior
Diamond Rose joins the team, alongside freshmen
Marissa Roberts and
Doria Small. Coach Nunez talked about the new additions and how impressed he's been with them going into the season opener.
"Joemyrah is a phenomenal player. Switch hitter who can play both first and the outfield. Diamond has a lot of power in her bat, and Serena and Aviyah are picking up the game quick."
The Lions finished the 2025 season with a 14-31 record and a 4-20 record. FMU looks to return to the SUN Conference Tournament for the first time since 2024.
