MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's women will be looking to snap their three-game home losing streak when it hosts Keiser University Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the FMU Wellness Center.
Home-losing snide notwithstanding, the Lady Lions (8-10, 3-5 Sun Conference) will also be looking to capture a much-needed Sun Conference victory to stay afloat in the conference standings in what will be the first game in a women's-men's doubleheader.
FMU, which fell to TSC rival Johnson & Wales University this past Thursday, recently welcomed senior
Isis Lane back to the lineup after she missed the previous two games. The 6-foot-4 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native, made an instant impact in her first game back – recording team-highs in points (19) and rebounds (15), the two categories she leads the team in on the season.
In Lane's absence, Lions head coach
Gregory Stanback has seen junior guard
Airneisha Gamble step up and provide consistent offensive output. Gamble has scored 14 or more points and grabbed at least five rebounds in the past three games.
In facing Keiser, FMU will be taking on a team that has had its share of ups and downs as well. The Lady Seahawks (9-9, 3-5) have had multiple three-game losing streaks, but have earned impressive wins along the way – including defeating St. Thomas University 85-76 this past Thursday. Keiser is a fairly efficient offensive squad, averaging 72 points per game thanks to three different players who turn in double-digit point performances on a nightly basis.
FMU's biggest key defensively will be slowing down Keiser guard Emily Patton. The 5-foot-8 Patton leads her team scoring 15.3 points per game, but is dangerous to go off for a big night because of her ability to shoot the three – a shot she hits at a nearly 44 percent clip.
Offensively, the Lions will need to get more substantial contributions from players beside Lane and Gamble. Senior guard
Shawnice King, the team's second-leading scorer this season, has missed the past two games with a lower extremity injury and remains a question mark heading into Saturday. Ashleighn Gary had a pair of solid games for FMU recently, but it will take a collective effort from the Lions to come out on top Saturday.
