MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Sometimes having a short memory is a good thing. In sports, it means a team can quickly flush a negative performance and move onto the next game.
Florida Memorial University's women will be looking to get back on a positive track Thursday when it travels to face Sun Conference foe Thomas University.
The women's game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in the Thomas University Gymnasium and will be the first game in a women's-men's doubleheader.
It's been a rough stretch for the Lady Lions (7-8, 2-3 Sun Conference), losing their past three games – all on their home floor – most stingingly a wonky performance against Southeastern University this past Saturday.
Working in FMU's favor Thursday will be the fact that it is going up against Thomas University (2-7, 0-5) team that has yet to win a Sun Conference game and has lost those five contests by an average of 25 points. The Lady Night Hawks, technically, have won their past two official regular season games; however, since they defeated Trinity Baptist College, they were doubled-up (86-43) by Valdosta University in an exhibition game and were credited with a win by forfeit over Carver College.
Going up against Thomas University could also represent an opportunity for Lions head coach
Gregory Stanback's team to find its offensive groove. During their recent three-game snide, Florida Memorial has seen its offensive production and point totals progressively decline in each game – including a recording a season-low point total against Southeastern. Thomas University has given up 75 points or more in four of their past six games.
Lions 6-foot-4 senior forward
Isis Lane, who had her streak of consecutive games with a double-double snapped at the beginning of FMU's losing streak, will have a sizeable height advantage – and probably an overall athleticism advantage – against the Night Hawks frontcourt, which lists its tallest player at 6-foot-1.
Also, Florida Memorial will need the continued offensive production out of guard
Shawnice King. King led the Lions in scoring in two of the past four games, showing herself to be a fairly reliable offensive option.
