Florida Memorial Releases 2021-22 Men’s Basketball Schedule

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – As Florida Memorial University's men's basketball program gladly turns the page from a 2020-21 season that saw almost all of its games played in empty gymnasiums due to health and safety protocols, the Lions prepare to open its 2021-22 season under much more normal circumstances.

Ready to play in front of crowds of fans – especially at home – again and looking to capture its first conference tournament berth since 2017, FMU announced its 2021-22 men's basketball schedule Thursday.

The Lions are scheduled to play a 29-game slate this season, with 12 games set to be played inside the friendly confines of the FMU Wellness Center. Florida Memorial will play 13 official road games and play four games on a neutral site as a part of two separate tournaments that the team will participate in this season.

Fans will be able to attend Florida Memorial's home games this season. Single game tickets will be available for purchase at www.FMUAthletics.com/Tickets before each game.

FMU's season will begin with a home game on October 28th, when it hosts NAIA independent University of Fort Lauderdale. It will be the first regular season meeting between the programs and it'll be the first game in which Lions head coach Ansar Al-Ameen gets a look at his revamped coaching staff and roster.

Al-Ameen brought in seasoned South Florida high school coach Jacob Shaw to serve on his staff alongside holdovers Jason Gilliam-Alexander and Josh Mendoza. Al-Ameen, who's entering his fourth season at the helm of the program, also hit the recruiting trails hard and brought in a new crop of guards to complement returning big men Mubashar Ali and Cheikh Kebe.

Following the season and home game – the team's only game in the month of October – the Lions will become road warriors, as their next seven games will be away.

FMU will take what has become an annual excursion to Alabama, where it will play a single game at Talladega College on November 3rd before riding over to Montgomery, Alabama to play in the Faulkner Tournament on Nov. 5 (against Middle Georgia State University) and Nov. 6 (against Faulkner University).

Florida Memorial's road trip will also make a stop through Deland, Florida to take on NCAA Division-I opponent Stetson University on November 9th, which will be the first-ever meeting between the Lions and the Hatters.

The Lions will open Sun Conference play on Nov. 13 against neighborhood rival St. Thomas University – playing the first game of the "Battle of Miami Gardens" in STU's Fernandez Family Center.

The final two games of the road stint will be a Nov. 15 ride up to Boca Raton, Florida to face NCAA Division-II foe Lynn University followed by a Nov. 18 trip to Warner University.

FMU will finally return to its home floor on November 20, when it hosts Keiser University – the Lions' first home conference game of the season.

Al-Ameen's team will then participate in the Keiser University Holiday Classic – taking on Edward Waters University (Nov. 23) and Arizona Christian University (Nov. 24) in West Palm Beach, Florida – before closing out the month with a home game against NCAA Division-II opponent Barry University (Fla.)

FMU will play six games in December, four of which at home – including conference matchups against Thomas University and College of Coastal Georgia and non-conference games against Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Oh.) and Edward Waters. The other two games will be against NCAA teams – a Dec. 8 game at Division-II's Nova Southeastern University (Fla.) and a Dec. 11 game at Division-I's Jacksonville University (Fla.).

Once the calendar flips to 2022, the Lions will begin the meat of its conference schedule as all 11 of their remaining games will be against Sun Conference teams.

Florida Memorial will host its portion of the "Battle of Miami Gardens" against St. Thomas on January 22nd, will honor its seniors on February 10th when it hosts Ave Maria University, and will close the regular season road games at Southeastern University (Feb. 12) and Webber International University (Feb. 19).
