FMU Women’s & Men’s Relay Teams Have Record-Breaking Day At FAMU Meet

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's men's and women's track and field teams both came away with wins in relay events at the 2021 Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University Relay Meet Saturday at the Rattlers Track Complex.
 
The Lions' women won the 1,600-meter sprint medley and set a new program record in the event with a time of 4:19.13 while the FMU men took the 1,600-meter (4x400) relay with a meet-best time of 3:17.86.
 
Overall, Florida Memorial's men finished sixth in total team points with 40 points and the women finished seventh with 22 points. Florida A&M's men's and women's teams won the overall meet with totals of 152 and 184 points respectively. FMU's Sun Conference cohort Southeastern University took second place overall on both the men's (140) and women's (111) side.
 
Participating in its third meet of the outdoor season, Florida Memorial had it strongest performance up to this point in the year Saturday.
 
The 1,600-meter relay team made a statement Saturday – setting the fastest seed time (3:15.20) before winning the event finals. First leg Rodheim Austin, Leroy Francis, Joshua Battle, and anchor leg Shemar Chambers finished nearly a full second ahead of second place Florida A&M.
 
FMU's 400-meter (4x100) relay team, which consisted of Brandon Walker and Adrian Wallace along with Austin and Chambers, a took second Saturday with a time of 41.43 – being edged out by Southeastern's team, which finished at 40.89. The 41.43 time Saturday also shattered the previous FMU school record time in the event (42.34 in 2017).
 
Chambers also manufactured 8 points for the Lions with his second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.81 – tying DeShawn Frazier (2018) for the fastest 200-meter dash time in Florida Memorial University men's track and field history.
 
Leroy Francis took 5th in the 200-meters (22.30); Antonio Thomas finished 4th in the 110-meter hurdles (16.15) – good for the third-best time in program history; and Battle finished 7th in the 400-meter run (50.85).
 
The women's 1,600-meter sprint medley – which consisted of two 200-meter legs, a 400-meter leg, and an 800-meter leg – was dominated by Florida Memorial sprinters. Quinzel Bazilio, Kaylee Higgins, Monique Woods, and Monique Brown won outpaced the competition with its 4:19.13 time – 16 full seconds ahead of second-place finisher Fort Valley State University.
 
Saturday's time also put the 2021 team atop the FMU record book list for best time in the 1,600-meter sprint medley (2-2-4-8) just ahead of 2012's team's time of 4:19.76.
 
Brown took third place in the 800-meter run and recorded the program's third-fastest time in the event with her 2:25.40 time.
 
Also, Woods and Higgins finished sixth and seventh respectively in the 400-meter dash while Bazilio took eighth in the 200-meter dash.
 
Florida Memorial's men's and women's teams will be back on the track this coming weekend (April 2-3) when it travels to Tampa, Florida to participate in the USF Invitational Meet.
