Chambers Wins 400-Meter Conference Title, FMU Sprinters Shine At TSC Championship Meet

BRADENTON, Fla. – Florida Memorial University freshman Shemar Chambers continued his quest to "Leave A Legacy" as one of the most decorated sprinters in FMU history as he won a Sun Conference individual championship in the 400-meter dash this past weekend at the Sun Conference Championship Meet at the Bradenton IMG Academy Track and Field Complex.

Chambers' single crown was the highlight of what was a strong weekend for the Lions' men's and women's teams.

Florida Memorial's women, which had two individual sprinters earn second place finishes as well as two relay teams earn silver medals, racked up 42 total points in team scoring and finished in seventh place among the nine Sun Conference teams. The Lions' men's team finished with 33 points and took eighth place among the nine teams.

Southeastern University's men's and women's teams won the overall team conference championships, totaling 261 and 302 points respectively.

Because FMU's men's and women's teams are comprised solely of sprinters, its point total was stymied as it could not produce points from any of the field or long-distance running events.

Chambers' time of 47.88 topped the competition and was the highlight of a day that also saw him take second place in the 200-meter dash. While his 20.94 time in the 200-meter dash was topped by Warner University's Alexander Gray's time of 20.79, Chambers broke the record that he earned a share of earlier this season (21.81) with his performance this past weekend.

Winning the 400-meter conference championship caps a stellar season for the Manchester, Jamaica native. Chambers won the 400-meters in multiple events this season and has either set new records or posted top-three times in Florida Memorial track and field history this season.

The Lions' men 400-meter (4x100) relay team also took second place Sunday. Chambers ran with Brandon Walker, Joshua Battle, and Adrian Wallace to post a time of 41.70 – their second-fastest time this season (the group ran 41.43 back in March) and the second-fastest 400-meter relay time in school history, behind the March 2021 time.

Antonio Thomas earned the men's team four points with his fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (14.88) while Leroy Francis took sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.39.

While FMU's women didn't secure individual championships, they did have a solid day.

Denai Wilson took silver in the 400-meter dash with her time of 57.13, which the second-fastest time in the event in Florida Memorial women's track and field history.

Monique Brown also earned a silver medal in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:22.52, being slightly edged by Southeastern's Courtney Gales' time of 2:22.00. Brown also secured four points for the Lady Lions with her fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (5:07.09).

Also, freshman Quinzel Bazilio took sixth and seventh places in the 400-meter and 200-meter dashes respectively.

The FMU women's 400-meter (4x100) relay team – which consisted of Wilson, Bazilio, Monique Woods, and Kaylee Higgins – took second place with its time of 48.59. The 1,600-meter (4x400) relay team also picked up a silver medal by posting a time of 3:58.37 – joining event-winner Southeastern University's relay team as the only two squad to finish with a time under four minutes Sunday.
