Lady Lions cruise by the Virgin Islands 83-47 on opening night

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Coach Gregory Stanback and the Lady Lions got off to a hot start, dominating from start to finish with a 83-47 victory over the Virgin Islands in the season opener at the FMU Wellness Center.

The Lady Lions (1-0) came out the gate with passion and excitement en route to a 20-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. FMU was led by Aliyah Deen-Ahmad who finished with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, including five assists and three boards while teammate Nyah Johnson added 16 points, nailing two 3-pointers and connecting on 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Johnson filled the stat sheet as she also grabbed seven boards, four assists and two steals. Furthermore, post player Jasmine Worthy was a dominant force all night as she dropped eight points and 14 rebounds to go along with seven blocks for Florida Memorial.

The Lady Lions continued to pressure the Buccaneers guards, forcing 22 turnovers while only committing a total of 10. FMU scored 18 points off UVI turnovers while its bench dominated and outscored the Buccaneers bench 26-12.

Teammates Chantel Barnett and Lameez Kahn each chipped, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively. 

As a team, FMU buried a total of 12 3-pointers and shot over 40 percent from the field, converting 31-of-71 field goals.

The Lady Lions return to action on Friday, November 4 as it faces Stillman College in the SSAC Challenge. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. in Babson Park, Fla.
