FMU T&F Has Multiple Individual Champions At TSC Indoor Championship Meet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida Memorial University's athletic program challenges its student-athletes to "Leave A Legacy" and a full handful of its track and field athletes did that with their performance at The Sun Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet this past Monday as five total – four women's and one men's – Lions brought home individual championships.
 
Shikyla Walcott took gold in the 60-meter dash; Denai Wilson won the 200-meter dash, Quinzel Bazilio edged out the competition to win the 60-meter hurdles; Anaya Holloway continued her strong freshman campaign by winning the shotput and Christian Edgerson was the lone champion on the men's side with his gold medal in the long jump as Lions impressed at the national meet which took place in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex Indoor Arena.
 
Overall, FMU's women's team had a solid performance – taking sixth in the team standings with 87.5 points. Southeastern University won the women's overall team TSC indoor championship by finishing with 293 points.
 
Florida Memorial's men's team finished in 10th place with 38 points. SEU's men won the team crown with its 256 points.
 
Aside from earning herself a gold medal Monday, Walcott's time in the 60-meter dash also earned the senior the No. 2 spot in the event in the FMU women's track and field record book behind Anika Baptiste's 2011 time of 7.58.
 
Junior sprinter Denai Wilson had a great day on the track as well, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.67 seconds. The Lions earned a total of 18 points in the 200 as Walcott finished third in the event with a time of 25.24. Wilson also took third in the 60-meter dash with a 7.73 time.
 
One the most exciting finishes of the belonged to Quinzel Bazilio in the 60-meter hurdles. The sophomore went down to the final meters before edging out University of South Carolina-Beaufort's Maisonne Jones with a time of 9.28 seconds – winning the event by six hundredths of a second. Bazilio's goal medal-winning time also set a new program record, breaking the previous record of 9.49 set back in 2017.
 
The Lions' women's 1,600-meter (4x400) relay team comprised of Bazilio, Wilson, Walcott, and Monique Brown finished second with a time of 4:00.83 behind Southeastern University's team's time of 3:56.89.
 
Brown also received the silver medal in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:22.62. Her fellow "Monique" – Monique Woods – earned the Lions three points with her sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.78.
 
The women's other 10-point producer was Holloway, who won the shotput with a heave of 11.61 meters. Holloway, who earned TSC Field Athlete of the Week honors recently and came to FMU as after decorated prep career at Hallandale High School (Fla.), has now won the shotput twice during the indoor season.
 
Andreana Graham took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.16 meters and she took fifth in the triple jump with a result of 10.35 meters.
 
On the men's side, Edgerson earned himself a gold medal in his first season competing as a track and field athlete at Florida Memorial. The sophomore, who also plays wide receiver of the Lions' football team, won the long jump with a leap of 7.04 meters – also good for the third-longest long jump result in FMU men's track and field history behind the shared record of 7.66 meters.
 
Behind Edgerson's No. 1 finish, the men's team's highest score was its 1,600-meter (4x400) relay team, which took third in the event with a time of 3:23.16.
 
Joshua Battle and Omar Kelly finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 400-meter dash with times of 50.88 and 50.93; Rodheim Austin finished sixth in the 60-meter dash 6.97 and Ali Miline finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.49.
