DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | With a total of 83 points, Florida Memorial finished in fourth place out of eight teams at the 2023 SUN Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Led by their top sprinter,
Saminu Abdul-Rasheed was crowned SUN Men's Outdoor Track and Field 100 meter champion after he posted a record 9.97 seconds in the famous race. Furthermore, Abdul-Rasheed also earned a gold medal in the men's 200 meters, posting a time of 20.68 seconds.
Jaylen Coleman was crowned SUN Men's Outdoor Track and Field Long Jump Champion, leaping a distance of 7.36 meters while teammate
Christian Edgerson finished fourth in the same event, leaping a distance of 7.01 meters.
Coleman later also earned a gold medal in the triple jump with a mark of 14.98 meters. With a mark of 14.29 meters.
FMU thrower
Narrson Tulloch earned a silver medal in the men's shot put. He also later produced a seventh place finish in the discus, throwing a distance of 40.60 meters.
In the men's 400 meters, FMU mid-distance runner
Omar Kelly earned a fourth place finish with a time of 48.23 seconds while teammate
Daniel Ermilus finished seventh in the same race, posting a mark of 51.01 seconds.
Florida Memorial represented well in the relay races, earning a silver medal in both the 4x1 and the 4x4. With a time of 41.08 seconds, the team of Coleman, Abdul-Rasheed,
Antonio Thomas and
Jaylyn Session finished second behind Southeastern, who posted a time of 40.88 seconds.
In one of the most exciting races of the entire meet, Florida Memorial relay team, comprised of Ermilus, Kelly, Abdul-Rasheed and
Gregg Bain took a substantial lead in the men's 4x4. However, Thomas University used every single possible moment to erase FMU's lead during the anchor leg and finished first with a time of 3:17.35, while the Lions posted a time of 3:17.54, falling in heartbreaking fashion.
