Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial's 2-0 victory over New College of Florida gives the women's soccer program their best start in over a decade. FMU head coach
Marc Lue Young has mixed feelings about the undefeated start because he understands there is plenty of room for improvement from his young squad.
"We did enough to win, but the all-around performance needs to improve going into conference games," said Lue Young. "It was great for Sierra to get an early goal and for her confidence as well. Sierra has created the most opportunities so far in the first few matches, and it's only a matter of time until she finds her true form. We look forward to the rest days and will now begin preparation for next week's away game at Edward Waters before conference play begins."
Freshman
Sierra Bartley broke the scoreless draw when she found the back of the net in the 17th minute of action, receiving a pass from
Lea Valdez. After the break,
Amealia Smith scored an insurance goal for the Lions less than one minute into the second half on a pass from Edier Alcorta Saenz.
As a team, FMU outshot New College of Florida 33 to 4, controlling the match by possessing the ball, producing plenty of shots, and keeping the ball in the opponent's final third for most of the afternoon.
Defensively, FMU goalkeeper Maria Goncalves received another clean sheet, not allowing a goal all afternoon behind a stellar back line, including team captain
Kiara Kallie, who missed a penalty kick late in the second half.
Florida Memorial returns to action Thursday, Sept. 7 as they travel to Duval to take on Edward Waters University in the Big Cat Classic. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Jacksonville.
