Three Lions Win Events, Florida Memorial Competes At Emory CrossPlex Meet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida Memorial University's track and field teams and first-year head coach Christopher McComb had solid showings in their first team competitions of the season this past weekend, having three individual event winners at Emory CrossPlex Showdown Meet in Birmingham, Alabama.

FMU had two event winners on the women's side in Shikyla Walcott and Denai Wilson. Wilson posted the fast time in the 200-meter dash, running 24.89 seconds to edge out all the competitors and earn 10 points for the Lions. Walcott won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.74 edging out Wilson for the top spot by milliseconds; Walcott's official time was 7.744 compared to 7.746 for Wilson – but the two earned 18 points for FMU in the event.

Sophomore Christian Edgerson, who played football for the Florida Memorial this past fall and was competing in his first collegiate track event for the Lions, won the long jump on the men's side with a leap of 7.32 meters.

Overall, Mississippi College finished with the highest men's and women's team scores 152 and 142 points respectively to win the meet. Florida Memorial totaled 50 points on the women's side to finish fifth while the men's team took seventh place with 30 total points.

The Lions had other standout performances over the weekend.

Antonio Thomas, another football player, competed in the 60-meter hurdles and took third with a time of 8.77 seconds. Omar Kelly took fourth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.59 seconds and Rodheim Austin finished sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.89 seconds.

On the women's side, McComb saw his team pick up points in the field events – something the Lions hadn't done in the past few seasons – thanks to Anaya Holloway taking sixth and eighth in the shot put and weight throw respectively. FMU also picked up points thanks to Andreana Graham (5.3 meters) and Quinzel Bazilio (4.83 meters) earning fourth and eighth respectively in the long jump competition.

Also, Monique Brown ran 2:22.60 in the 800-meter run – being narrowly edged out of third place by Emory University's Lily Taylor, who was clocked at 2:22.58. Monique Woods took seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.73, missing out on sixth place by a slim 0.03 difference.
