After 17 seasons, Coach Stanback retires from basketball

The '23 SUN Coach of the Year won the regular season and conference tournament for the first time in school history.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | After 17 years, Florida Memorial head women's basketball coach Gregory Stanback is retiring from basketball.

"Florida Memorial has truly been a blessing for me," said Stanback. "One year ended up turning into 17 years! This program has grown and will continue to grow on the national level. I'm excited for my next challenge and what God has for me. Thank you to all my former players, coaches, and colleagues. It truly was an honor to be in your presence. Thank you to my family, for sharing me with so many I have impacted. This is not a goodbye, but a see you later."

Coach Stanback spent his first eight seasons at FMU as women's assistant basketball coach before being promoted to head coach for nine seasons. This past season, the Lions had one of the most historic seasons in SUN conference history, winning a total of 17-straight conference games en route to a SUN Women's Basketball Regular Season title, then later winning the SUN Women's Basketball Tournament. The double championship won by the Lions was the first time such a feat has been accomplished in program history. He led the team to one of the best records in program history as the Lions finished 24-6 overall and 15-1 in conference play. He retires with the second most wins in program history. He also coached a total of five NAIA All-Americans throughout his career.

"We are truly grateful for the many years of work that Greg Stanback has dedicated to Florida Memorial," said Director of Athletics Jason Horn. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors as he goes down in the history books as one of the most decorated coaches in program history."

Stanback was named 2022-23 SUN Women's Basketball Coach of the Year while FMU guard Tianna Ayulo was named 2022-23 SUN Women's Basketball Player of the Year as well as earning second-team NAIA All-American honors. FMU guard Aliyah Deen Ahmad was named 2023 SUN Women's Basketball Tournament Most Valuable Player and earned NAIA All-American honorable mention. Both players, including teammate Chantel Barnett were all named first-team All-SUN in this historic final season for Coach Stanback.

Greg Stanback was named 2022-23 SUN Coach of the Year.

FMU athletics will soon begin a national search for its next head women's basketball coach.
