MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After playing a slate of non-conference games during spring break, Florida Memorial University will open what is the meat of its Sun Conference schedule this weekend as it travels to Bluffton, South Carolina to take on University of South Carolina-Beaufort in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at USCB's Richard Gray Sports Complex.

The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday is set to have a single game set for a 12 noon first pitch.

About The Lions (11-9, 3-3 SUN)
  • FMU showed its character and perseverance this past Wednesday, rallying back from a 9-run deficit to capture a 11-10 win over Bryant & Stratton College-Albany,
  • Senior outfielder Rohandry Javier completed the rally with a walk-off 2-RBI double that won the game and snapped a three-game home losing streak for the Lions.
  • Senior relief pitcher Ramon Garcia came in during the eighth inning and held BSCA scoreless over the final two innings to help Florida Memorial rally.
  • FMU head coach Florentino Burgos has routinely used multiple pitchers during games this season – typically throwing each one for a maximum of two innings – including using 10 different pitchers against the Bobcats this past Wednesday.
  • The Lions had to shuffle their lineup this week, playing without outfielders Yunior Sanchez (undisclosed) and Jalen Young (lower extremity), and could continue to do so as Young's and Sanchez's statuses remain unclear.
  • Relief pitcher Isaias Espiritusantos leads the team in opposing batting average at .176 and ERA at 1.69.

Scouting USC-Beaufort (12-16, 0-6 SUN)
  • South Carolina-Beaufort enters the weekend as a team trying to bounce back from midweek 8-1 loss to non-conference foe middle Georgia State.
  • The Sand Sharks have been an up-and-down team for much of the early part of the season – more down than up – with three different three-game losing streaks.
  • USCB is an average batting team as well, holding a .300 overall batting average while scoring just over 5 runs per game.
  • Sand Sharks head coach Ted Faulkner has been at the helm of the program since the 2021 season, leading the team to the Sun Conference Championship Tournament championship game – finishing as the runner-up – and to the opening round of the NAIA Baseball National Tournament in his first season.

Series History
  • Florida Memorial trails the all-time series against South Carolina-Beaufort 32-7.
  • The Lions have split the past 10 meetings with USCB 5-5.
  • FMU last took a weekend series from the Sand Sharks during the 2020 season, taking both games of a doubleheader to win the series 2-1.
  • Florida Memorial is 3-15 when playing on the road against South Carolina-Beaufort.

Keys To Victory
  • Redundancy notwithstanding, FMU's success in this game and every remaining game this season will come down to the success of its pitching staff.
  • If Burgos continues to use multiple pitchers in every game, the order in which he sends the arms to the mound could also be a huge factor.
